Gamelan Pacifica is among the finest ensembles devoted to the performance of music for gamelan in the U.S. Formed in 1980, it has performed extensively in the Pacific Northwest, as well as Canada and throughout the U.S. Gamelan Pacifica is an active and adventurous ensemble, with a reputation for creating diverse productions merging traditional and contemporary musical forms with dance, theater, puppetry, and visual media. They have been guest performers at The Smithsonian Institute’s Festival of Indonesia, New Music Across America Festival, Vancouver New Music Society, On the Boards, Walker Art Center, Performing Arts Chicago, and many others. In the Northwest they perform regularly and have appeared at the University of Washington, Seattle University, Town Hall, Cornish College of the Arts, the Seattle Art Museum, Evergreen State College, Centrum, Bumbershoot Festival, Arts in Nature Festival, University of Oregon, Whidbey Institute, CenterStage, and others. Visiting artists have included some of the most notable artists of Indonesia, including Rahayu Supanggah, Al Suwardi, Peni Chandra Rini, Heri Purwanto, Sutrisno Hartana, Wayan Sinti, Didik Nini Thowok, Sri Djoko Rahardja, I Made Sidia, Endo Suanda, Dedek Wahyudi, Ki Purbo Asmoro, Goenawan Mohamad, and Tony Prabowo. Rob Scheps & The Real McCoy

Oregon native Rob Scheps began studying the tenor saxophone at age nine. He grew up on Long Island, New York. After having graduated high school at age sixteen, he enrolled in the New England Conservatory. He received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies with Honors in performance in 1986. While living in the Boston area he led his own groups; most notably the True Colors Big Band. In 1988 he moved to New York, formed the Rob Scheps Core-tet and Bartokking Heads and established himself as a formidable force on the jazz scene.

Rob Scheps & The Real McCoy is a tribute to the legendary McCoy Tyner, who this year celebrates his 80th birthday. The band features an all star lineup of Scheps on tenor saxophone, with pianist John Hansen, bassist Phil Sparks, and drummer Will Lone. They will perform two sets at Egan’s Ballard Jam House on Friday, September 21st.

This particular set up explores the organ trio/quartet format, however, instead of focusing on standard blues and groove oriented styles, Jeremy’s Pyramid Scheme goes one step further and adds an Ornettian element in which the barline is respected at the highest level.

He and his wife founded a successful non-profit music school. He has produced several documentary films and runs a video website featuring happenings in the small community where he lives.

Laura Love is an award winning “folk-funk” singer/songwriter/bassist who has been touring throughout the world since the early 1990s. Laura has released 11 CDs on major and minor labels, she has performed at nearly every great music festival in North America and Australia, she has composed commissioned music for dance and theater productions and she’s a published author. Laura is currently recording a new CD of original songs which will be released late Winter/early Spring of 2018.

Jeremy Shaskus is a freelance saxophonist and composer/arranger living in the Seattle Washington area. Jeremy is adept at many styles. He has played everything from avant-garde free jazz to soul/dance music. He has shared the stage with the likes of Joe Piscapoe, Joe Mosello, Bernard Purdie, Chico Mendoza, Julian Priester, David Haney and other well known artists.

Jeremy’s Pyramid Scheme is another pebble dropped in the stream of what is classified as music. Though it is not totally in the vein of John Cage, it still has some of his musical elements. Without pretension it is an honor to say that influences come from all things music, mostly within the American improvised genre. This particular set up explores the organ trio/quartet format, however, instead of focusing on standard blues and groove oriented styles, Jeremy’s Pyramid Scheme goes one step further and adds an Ornettian element in which the barline is respected at the highest level.

Taylor Zickefoose is a Seattle-based, international award-winning jazz vocalist. Taylor is the first and only person to-date to have won both divisions of the Seattle-Kobe Vocal Jazz Competition. In addition to these honors, she is a multiple DownBeat Student Music Award recipient. After completing two years of music composition study at Central Washington University, Taylor was selected to study vocal jazz at the University of Music and Performance in Graz, Austria, with Dena DeRose. While in the States, Taylor has performed at Jazz Alley, Triple Door, The Royal Room, North City Bistro, Egan’s and a number of other venues with a plethora of different bands.

Joel Bean is a jazz pianist and organist based in Seattle, Washington. He has played at venues throughout the city, such as Egan’s and The Royal Room, as well as at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, ID, and the Monterey Next Gen Jazz Festival, in Monterey, California. Joel is currently working on his undergraduate degree in jazz performance from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington, where he has studied with jazz luminaries such as Dawn Clement, Randy Halberstadt, and Chuck Deardorf, as well as having studied Gamelan music and Western Classical music. Joel’s music takes influence from music such as Bach, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Frederic Chopin. He has played with local Seattle area musicians such as Brent Jensen, Paul Gabrielson, and Geoff Harper, as well as with his own groups.

Tenor / soprano saxophonist Rob Scheps has performed with Gil Evans Band, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, John Scofield, George Russell, Bob Moses, Terumasa Hino, Al Grey, Clark Terry, Sam Rivers, Julius Hemphill, Duffy Jackson, Cecil Taylor, Joey Calderazzo Quartet… He leads his own bands; Magnets! with Kim Clarke; The Rob Scheps Big Band in Portland, Oregon; and the Rob Scheps Core-tet in NYC; which has a new CD entitled Live at Smalls on the way.

Trumpeter Jim O’Connor graduated from the Juilliard School of Music and has been freelancing around the New York area ever since. He has performed, toured and recorded with Blood Sweat and Tears, Keely Smith, The New York Pops, They Might Be Giants, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Maria Schneider, The Monkees, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and John Pizzarelli. Jim also performed in many Broadway show orchestras including The Producers, Forty Second Street, South Pacific, Kiss Me Kate, Cats and Jersey Boys. You can hear him many times a day on the theme from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.

The Music of Gil Evans Sextet is an all-star lineup performing the music of the legendary Gil Evans, and lead by two members of his band – saxophonist Rob Scheps and trumpeter Jim O’Connor. The band also features alto saxophonist Jeremy Shaskus, pianist Joel Bean, bassist Phil Sparks, and drummer Will Lone, along with special guest Tom Varner on French horn.
